Turkey Unites With Racially Abused Mikel Obi After Sunday Match With Fenerbahçe

Many Turkish nationals have taken a stand with racially abused Nigerian football star, John Mikel Obi.

The Turks took to social media on Monday with the hashtag “#WeStandWithObi” in support of Trabzonspor’s Nigerian midfielder, Mikel Obi, against racial slurs he received after Sunday’s match with arch-rival Fenerbahçe.

The club released a statement later in the day condemning racist attacks against the midfielder.

Their statement read: “Racism is a safe haven for the ignorant and the weak. We hereby condemn the racist abuse lodged against our player Obi Mikel after the Fenerbahçe match and would like to inform the public that we have filed criminal complaints against the perpetrators.”

It was gathered that after the match, in which Fenerbahçe was defeated, Mikel became a target of racist abuse with his Instagram page receiving scores of racist messages including use of the N-word and banana emojis.
