Former Arsenal manager and now FIFA Technical Director, Arsene Wenger, has asked Unai Emery to take responsibilities for his failure at the Emirates Stadium.
Naija News recalls that in 2018 Emery replaced in Wenger who spent 22 years at the club.
The Spaniard who was sacked last year accused some players of showing bad attitude during his time in charge of at North London.
The former PSG manager was replaced by Mikel Arteta, a former Manchester City assistant manager.
Speaking with France Football, Emery claimed some Arsenal players “asked for more than what they were giving back”.
“Arsenal was a club on a downward slope for two years before I arrived.”
“We stopped this fall and even began to rebuild the club with the Europa League final and fifth place in the league…”
The 48-year-old also stated that the exit of five Arsenal captains caused instability in the team.
“But we lost our four captains: [Laurent] Koscielny, [Petr] Cech, [Aaron] Ramsey and [Nacho] Monreal. They were personalities that we missed this season to stay on the right track,” he said.
“And some players did not have a good attitude and asked for more than what they were giving back.
“Taking all of that into account, we needed time to succeed with our transition to a new Arsenal which is what I wanted.”
Reacting to Emery’s comment at the Laureus World Spirts Award, Arsene Wenger dismissed the former PSG manager’s claim.
Wenger said: “In 2017 we made 75 points and won the FA Cup so you cannot say that [Arsenal were in decline] and the year before [2016] we finished second in the league.
“2018 was my last year but it is very difficult to come out on that.
“Arsenal is a club that is in a very strong position financially. It has good players, after that when you are a manager you have to stand up for what you do and your result and not look around you.
“That is the only thing you can do.”
