The United Kingdom has approved the use of a widely-available steroid drug dexamethasone for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

The UK Secretary of State for Health & Social Care, Matt Hancock made this disclosure on Tuesday via his Twitter handle @MattHancock.

Hancock who is also MP for West Suffolk hailed UK scientists for the study that confirmed dexamethasone can significantly help reduce deaths of severely-ill COVID-19 patients.

“Today, we’ve approved Dexamethasone for immediate use across our NHS.

“This life-saving discovery was made in Britain and is a testament to the brilliant work of scientists and the national effort to save lives & protect our NHS,” Hancock tweeted.

A team of scientists from Oxford University had conducted a study tagged Recovery Trial using Dexamethasone.

The study, they said, showed that the widely available steroid drug can help increase survival rate in hospitalised COVID-19 patients with severe respiratory complications.

Dexamethasone is known and widely used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and asthma.
