Andy Kim has made history by winning a U.S. Senate seat in New Jersey, marking a significant milestone as the first Korean American elected to the Senate.
The 42-year-old Democrat defeated Curtis Bashaw of the Republican Party in the general election on Tuesday.
He emerged as the Democratic Party’s candidate after beating New Jersey’s first lady, Tammy Murphy, in the party’s primary.
Kim currently represents New Jersey’s 3rd district in the U.S. House of Representatives.
He will be sworn in later this month, taking over the New Jersey’s Senate seat previously held by Robert Menendez, who resigned after being convicted of taking bribes.
