No fewer than 18 kidnapped victims have been rescued from bandits in Katsina State after the state police command foiled a kidnap attempt along the Funtua-Gusau highway in Zamfara State.

Operatives of the command also recovered an unspecified number of rustled animals after thwarting a cattle rustling attempt at Gidan Gada village in Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State.

This was contained in a statement by the command’s spokesman, ASP Abubakar Sadiq, on Sunday in Katsina.

Sadiq, who noted that the team successfully repelled the armed bandits’ attack and rescued 18 victims unharmed, said the kidnap attempt occurred on January 3, 2025, at about 21:30 hrs, after information was received at the Faskari Divisional Police Headquarters that some suspected armed bandits, wielding AK-47 rifles and shooting sporadically, had ambushed four vehicles along the Funtua-Gusau highway.

He said the vehicles—one maroon Toyota Avensis en route to Yankara village from Batsari; one white DAF motor vehicle; one Pacars Canter motor vehicle; and one green DAF motor vehicle, all en route to Funtua from Gusau, Zamfara State—were conveying 18 passengers when they were attacked by the suspected kidnappers in an attempt to abduct all the occupants.

According to him, upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Faskari promptly mobilized operatives to the scene, where a gunfight ensued.

In a related development, Sadiq said that on the same day, at about 23:00 hrs, some suspected armed bandits attacked Gidan Gada village in Kafur LGA, Katsina State, rustling a number of cattle.

He reiterated that upon receiving the report, the DPOs of Kafur and Malumfashi Divisional Police Headquarters jointly mobilized and traced the suspected bandits to the Fanisau village area, where they engaged the bandits in a gun duel, successfully recovering all the rustled animals.

“Unfortunately, the DPO of Kafur sustained a gunshot injury during the encounter. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention and is currently responding to treatment.

“Efforts are in top gear to ensure the arrest of the perpetrators of the dastardly act,” the statement added.

Speaking on the incident, the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar Musa, applauded the officers for their bravery and urged members of the public to continue supporting the command and other security agencies with timely information for prompt and decisive action.
