Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin has criticised United States President Donald Trump over his recent public clash with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last Friday.

Slotkin described the incident as a bad episode of reality TV, adding that the late United States President Ronald Reagan must be rolling in his grave.

Trump had clashed with Zelenskyy in the Oval Office after the Ukrainian leader cast doubt on the U.S. president’s bid to force a peace deal with Russia.

“President Trump loves to say ‘peace through strength’ — that’s actually a line he stole from Ronald Reagan,” Slotkin said on Tuesday as she delivered the Democratic response after Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress.

“But let me tell you, after the spectacle that just took place in the Oval Office last week, Reagan must be rolling in his grave.

“That scene in the Oval Office wasn’t just a bad episode of reality TV—it summed up Trump’s whole approach to the world.

“He will be cosying up to dictators like Vladimir Putin and kicking our friends, like the Canadians, in the teeth.

“As a Cold War kid, I’m thankful it was Reagan and not Trump in office in the 1980s. Trump would have lost us the Cold War,” she said.
