Gunmen attacked the Awgu Divisional Police Headquarters in Enugu State in the early hours of Monday killing Constable Akpa Emmanuel and destroying facilities at the station.

The assailants, security sources told our correspondent, made off with several weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and two riot guns.

“The attack on the police station is a worrisome development, and we condemn it in its entirety,” said a source within the police command. “We are working to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

The attack has created palpable tension in Awgu town, with several security details, including spy agents, deployed to the area.

According to sources, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity because of fear of reprisal, the attack occurred just a few weeks after a new Divisional Police Officer was deployed to the division.

“We are doing everything possible to restore normalcy in the area and ensure the safety of our personnel and the general public,” said another source.

In response to the attack, the new Commissioner of Police in Enugu, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, deployed reinforcements to the division, including the Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Special Forces, the Police Mobile Force, the Counter-Terrorism Unit, and other tactical teams.

Meanwhile, another attack was reported at the Inyi Divisional Police Headquarters in Oji-River Local Government Area around 2:00 a.m. on the same day. Fortunately, security agents were able to repel the attack, and there were no reported casualties or damage.

Efforts to reach the Enugu State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, for comment were unsuccessful.
