There was widespread confusion across Lagos on Wednesday as candidates sitting for the English Language paper of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, experienced severe delays, with some writing as late as 11:45 p.m. under torchlight.

DAILY POST gathered that the examination, scheduled to start by 9:00 a.m., was delayed for several hours at numerous centres, including Birrel Avenue Senior High School, Sabo-Yaba, Eva Adelaja Senior Girls Secondary School, Bariga, Oke-Ira Senior Grammar School, Ogba, among others.

It was gathered that some parents were seen hanging around school gates well into the night, while exhausted students remained inside writing their papers under dim lighting conditions.

“My daughter didn’t finish until almost 12:00 a.m.,” said Mrs Fausat Olaniyi, who waited outside the Bariga centre for hours. “No explanation, no apology. Just stress and confusion. This is inhuman.”

Reports indicate the delay stemmed from a last-minute replacement of the English Language paper, following an alleged leak online.

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, is said to have reprinted and redistributed the papers on short notice, leading to a nationwide delay.

The disruption was not limited to Lagos. Similar chaos was reported in Oyo, Ogun, Benue, Osun, and other states.

In a statement issued late Wednesday, Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, apologised to candidates, parents, and schools affected by the delays.

She explained that the decision to replace the paper was necessary to protect the integrity of the exam.

“While we successfully maintained the integrity of the examination, it impacted the timeliness and seamless conduct of the English Language paper,” the statement reads in part.

She added that WAEC was working with security agencies to prevent such lapses from recurring in future examinations.
