The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano state sector command has confirmed that a road traffic accident along the Kano-Kaduna highway has claimed the life of 19 people.

According to the statement issued by the sector’s Public Relations Officer, CRC Abdullahi Labaran, the accident happened at Gadar Yankifi, Garun Malam LGA in Kano State on Saturday, 31 May, 2025 around 12.30pm.

The accident involved a Toyota Coaster Bus KN041 A17, belonging to the government of Kano state. The bus had 24 passengers on board at the time, which included 23 adult males and 1 adult female.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that nineteen (19) people sadly lost their lives, while five (5) others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The injured victims, as well as the remains of the deceased, have been evacuated to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital,

“The Sector Commander, Corps Commander MB Bature, while expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives, reiterated the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safety on our roads. He strongly warned drivers against overspeeding, overloading, and all forms of traffic violations, which remain major contributors to road crashes”.

Bature added that safety which comes and begins from the individual is also a shared and joint duty and invited all motorists to be prudent in the use of the steering wheel.

Following the incident, the Commander said the agency will increase patrol and surveillance as well as public awareness campaigns to avert similar incidents in the future.

The tragic accident under review once again served to draw attention to the fact that obeying basic road safety rules is still a serious concern in Nigeria, especially on major roads such as the Kano-Kaduna highway.
