Stevie Wonder has been crowned the best R&B singer of all time by Billboard.

In a recent publication, the music industry magazine celebrated Wonder’s extraordinary career, which began when he was just 11 years old and has spanned over six decades.

Billboard also praised the 75-year-old music icon for “helping erect the foundation on which later and next-gen R&B artists stand”.

“Having recently celebrated his 75th birthday, Wonder is now a revered pioneer whose formidable arsenal of skills: singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and arranger,” the magazine wrote.

“He paved his yellow brick road to an unprecedented run of musical wizardry and groundbreaking albums in the ‘70s, incorporating R&B, soul, pop, gospel, funk and jazz.”

Born Steveland Morris, Wonder, who is also of Ghanaian descent, is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.

Wonder debuted on Billboard Hot 100 in 1963 at the age of 13 for his song ‘Fingertips Part 2’ and has topped the chart 10 times in his career.

He boasts a total of 74 Grammy nominations and has won the award 25 times.

Aretha Franklin took the second position while Michael Jackson claimed the third spot.

Beyonce, Whitney Houston, James Brown, Prince, Mariah Carey, R Kelly and Marvin Gaye made the top 10.
