Chinese President Xi Jinping, on Wednesday, extended condolences to President Bola Tinubu following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
On behalf of the Chinese government and people, “Xi expressed deep condolences and extended sincere sympathy to the family of Buhari, and the Nigerian government and people,” as reported by its local news medium Xinhua.
According to the report, Xi described Buhari as “an important leader of Nigeria, saying that he dedicated himself to exploring a development path suited to his country’s national conditions.”
He praised Buhari’s role in promoting national unity and progress, as well as his standing in the international community.
Buhari was also noted for his commitment to strengthening ties with China and supporting broader China-Africa cooperation.
Xi said his passing is a great loss for Nigeria and the Chinese people, who considered him a valued friend.
The Chinese president reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with Nigeria and expressed hope for continued cooperation between the two countries.
Buhari, who passed away at the age of 82 on Sunday, served as president from 2015 to 2023.
