Folarin Odunlami, the Afrobeats artiste known professionally as Fola, has revealed how his pursuit of a music career in Lagos began with an unexpected night in a police cell.

During a recent interview with The Beat 99.9 FM Lagos, the ‘Alone’ hitmaker revealed that the incident on his first day in the city in 2018 left him questioning his life choices.

“I relocated to Lagos in 2018 to pursue my music career. It has been rough but… I wasn’t born here, so it was so hard at first, but I have adapted to both the living conditions and the hustle,” he said.

“The very first day I came to Lagos, I was arrested. I slept at the police station. It was a long story. I don’t want to remember it. I almost gave up.”

The singer, however, credited his resilience and determination for helping him adapt to the city’s infamous fast-paced lifestyle.

Fola is a rising music sensation who has made a name for himself in the competitive industry. He gained significant prominence after signing with Bella Shmurda’s record label Dangbana Republik in October 2024.

With tracks like ‘Alone’, ‘Feeling’, ‘Mandela’ and the hit collaboration ‘Who Does That’ with Shmurda, Fola’s discography reflects his growing influence in the industry.
