Ahead of the October 2 deadline to enforce the permit requirement for vehicles with tinted glass, some motorists have criticised the plan, saying it will push Nigerians deeper into poverty.

They hailed the move by the Nigerian Bar Association to stop it.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had in August extended the grace period for enforcing the requirement from May 30 to October 2, 2025.

It is the second extension granted by the police after the enforcement was first announced in late April.

According to a statement by the immediate past Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, the decision followed a surge in applications through the official portal, which he said reflected increased public compliance.

Adejobi noted that the extension of time was also to enable further finetuning of both digital and physical verification processes to preserve the integrity of the permit system and prevent abuse.

The NBA then filed a suit at the Federal High Court challenging the requirement, which it described as a violation of the fundamental rights of Nigerians.

According to him, the amount being charged should also be reduced to make it easier for vehicle owners to obtain the permit.

“The N14,200 charge is too much. We only hope the government will reduce the amount,” he added.

Similarly, another motorist, Kingsley Onyia, described the levy for tinted glass permits as arbitrary, wondering why the government would allow the importation of tinted cars into the country and then turn around to extort the end users.

He said, “I am not bothered for now. My vehicle is a Toyota Sienna, and the tinted glasses on the passenger doors are factory-fitted. If the police think that the vehicle constitutes a security risk, then the government should ban the importation of vehicles with tinted glass into the country.

“This government has impoverished Nigerians enough, and if they don’t take care about how they are overreaching in their exploitation of poor Nigerians, there may be an explosion or revolution.”

Onyia, a pastor in one of the new generation churches, told Sunday PUNCH that the police should be ready to meet resistance, affirming his support for the NBA’s court action against the police levy.

“I can tell you for free that I am ready to go to the police stations if need be. I totally support the NBA’s court action against that illegal police decision.”

Another motorist, who identified himself simply as Chief Kazeem, said it was unfair for the police to levy him again after he had paid for a tinted permit when he purchased his car several years ago.

Kazeem, who is based in Ogun State, said, “I have collected a tinted glass permit in the past for my Sienna car. Why are they asking me to pay again?

“The price of a driving licence has risen; now they are demanding a tinted glass permit, which is not fair. The police should not collect a levy for a tinted glass permit from those who have obtained it before.

“Why did they cancel the tinted glass permit that was issued to me before, only to turn back to collect another one? They are cheating people.”

Exercise’ll continue – Police

The Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, referred one of our correspondents to state police public relations officers.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, told Sunday PUNCH that the case between the NBA and the Nigeria Police on the matter would not stop enforcement.

She insisted that enforcement would commence in October, adding that journalists would be informed if the court ruled against the decision of the police on the exercise.

She said, “The court has not directed the police to suspend what they are doing. So, the process continues. If the court now passes judgment stopping the police from going ahead with the exercise, journalists will be informed about it.

“If they (NBA) are going ahead with their case, the police will continue with what we are doing concerning the tinted glass permit, and enforcement will start in October. We are giving people time to go online and do it. It is done basically online.

“We have been briefed on that, and the police are partnering an outfit on this. Another thing is biometric data capturing. The vehicle owner is expected to go to any State CID for character clearance.

“So, it cannot be done for someone else. The vehicle owner must be present to do it by himself or herself. The money is N14,200, and if it expires after one year, you will not pay N14,200 again because renewal is less. I think renewal is N7,000 or N5,000.”

Also, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna, noted that the command would follow directives on the tinted glass permit.

He said, “The Force Headquarters position on the tinted glass permit is very clear. The Force Headquarters issued a statement on it, and whatever you see in the statement is the position of the state command.

“It is not yet time for enforcement, and before that time, you may see another statement from the Force Headquarters. If there is any instruction from the Force Headquarters, we will enforce it; we will do as directed. But what we have on the ground now has already been communicated to us.”
