A Rigasa Magistrate Court in Kaduna has ordered the remand of a social media activist, Abubakar Muhammad, popularly known as Sarki Sultan, at the Kaduna Correctional Centre over alleged cyber offences.

DAILY POST gathered that Sultan was arrested on September 27, at Layin Dan-Masani, Rigachikun, in Igabi Local Government Area following a formal complaint that he allegedly used phishing social media accounts to harass and extort a citizen.

He was paraded before the court on Monday by the Department of State Services, DSS, and arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on extortion and criminal intimidation, contrary to sections of the Penal Code.

The prosecution told the court that the accused created multiple fake social media accounts, which he allegedly used to threaten and extort the complainant.

According to the charges, Sultan demanded payments through cryptocurrency and Point of Sales, POS, channels and also attempted to lure the complainant to a location under suspicious circumstances.

The DSS prosecutor further informed the court that digital evidence, including recovered accounts, payment trails, and conversations linking him to the offences, would be presented during trial.

The magistrate ordered that Sultan be remanded in custody pending further hearing of the case. The matter was adjourned to a later date for continuation.
