Human rights activist, Femi Falana, SAN, says the trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, is a political matter that should be sorted out of the courtroom.
Falana stated this while fielding questions from newsmen during a courtesy call on Governor Alex Otti, at his country home, Umuehim Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South council area, Abia State.
The senior lawyer insisted that there is no basis for not having Kanu’s matter resolved politically.
”I cannot comment on pending proceedings. Do you understand me? Like you said, the case was in court today but I believe that it is a matter that should be sorted out outside the courtroom.
“For me, it’s a political case. And if you have a situation where some governments are negotiating with bandits or other criminal elements, there can be no basis for not having that matter resolved politically,” he said.
DAILY POST reports that Nnamdi Kanu was first arrested in 2015 on treason and terrorism charges. While out on bail, Kanu fled the country.
The embattled separatist leader has not been released since his rearrest in 2021 but has remained under the custody of Nigeria’s secret police Department of State Services, DSS, as the government continues to hear his case in court.
