The Federal Ministry of Works has approved the temporary use of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road to ease traffic congestion caused by a gas-laden tanker accident at the Chisco axis, inward Victoria Island, Lagos.

The development was announced in a statement posted on X on Monday by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA.

According to the statement, the decision was reached following the disruption caused by the overturned tanker on the main carriageway, which led to major traffic delays in the area.

It read: “The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation wishes to inform motorists that due to a truck accident at the Chisco area, Lekki, the Federal Ministry of Works has approved the opening of the Coastal Road for use pending when normalcy is restored. Motorists are implored to be patient while plying the area.”

The statement was signed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, who urged motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and exercise caution while navigating the alternative route.

Earlier on Monday, LASTMA had confirmed that its officers, in collaboration with emergency responders, successfully prevented what could have been a major fire disaster after the gas-laden tanker overturned on the busy Victoria Island-bound carriageway.

The agency noted that recovery operations were ongoing and assured the public that traffic would return to normal as soon as the tanker was safely evacuated.
