President Donald Trump on Monday designated certain chapters or other subdivisions of the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations and specially designated global terrorists.
The designation affects the chapters in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt for “engaging in or supporting” violence and destabilization campaigns that harm their own regions, United States citizens, and US interests.
Trump relied on his powers contained in the United States constitution and laws, including the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
In a presidential action, Trump noted that the Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, has developed into a global transnational network and carried out atrocities in the Middle East and beyond.
The US leader cited the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, attack in Israel, when the Lebanese wing of the MB joined Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian factions to attack civilian and military targets within Israel.
Trump also recalled how a senior MB leader in Egypt, on October 7, 2023, called for attacks against US partners and interests, as well as the provision of support to the militant wing of Hamas by Jordanian MB leaders.
The President directed the Secretaries of State and the Treasury to, after consultation with the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence, submit a joint report concerning the designation within 30 days.
Last week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott designated the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organization, banning it from buying or acquiring land in the state.
Abbott equally designated the Council on American-Islamic Relations as a FTO and TCO. Founded in 1994, the CAIR is the largest Muslim civil liberties organization in America.
