A group, Centre for Human Rights Advocacy and Wholesome Society, CEHRAWS, has urged the National Assembly to immediately engage the Federal Government to review the new tax law, warning that it could bring more hardship upon the people.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier in the week said that there was no going back on the implementation of the new tax law.
But the Executive Director of the group, Chuka Peter Okoye in a statement on Thursday, warned that the nation may witness mass job losses and collapse of small businesses, if the harsh areas of the law are not expunged.
The group which said that it promotes good governance and economic fairness, dismissed the position of the Federal Government that the new tax laws will favour low income earners and vulnerable persons.
“Many Nigerians may grapple with rising living costs, job insecurity and social uncertainty because of the new tax law.
“It may place additional burdens on households and small businesses without sufficient safeguards for the most vulnerable.
“Taxation, while essential to governance, should be humane, constitutionally sound and designed to promote equity rather than widen inequality,” Okoye said.
According to the group, meaningful reform requires listening to citizens, strengthening accountability mechanisms and ensuring that revenue policies are aligned with economic realities on the ground.
It further warned that poorly designed fiscal measures risk eroding public confidence and undermining social cohesion.
Beyond taxation, the organisation called for renewed attention to the rule of law, accountable policing and the protection of livelihoods across all tiers of government.
