Nigeria’s Super Eagles have secured the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties after a captivating 0-0 draw in the third-place play-off.
The dramatic shootout capped a hard-fought encounter, leaving Nigerian fans celebrating a podium finish.
The match itself was a cagey affair, with both teams struggling to break the deadlock in regular time. Chances were at a premium, though Nigeria’s Paul Onuachu had a goal disallowed by VAR in the 36th minute, adding to the tension. Moses Simon and Onuachu again threatened before halftime, but the Egyptian defense held firm.
With neither side was able to find a winning goal, the bronze medal was ultimately decided from 12 yards.
Egypt’s star man, Mohamed Salah, stepped up first but saw his effort saved. Fadel Dele-Bashiru also missed Nigeria’s opening penalty. While Omar Marmoush and Ramy Rabia scored for Egypt, misses from their other takers proved costly. Nigeria, on the other hand, displayed nerves of steel, with Akor Adams, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, and Ademola Lookman, all finding the back of the net to seal a 4-2 victory in the shootout.
The Super Eagles’ triumph marks a successful end to their AFCON campaign, demonstrating resilience and composure under pressure. While the ultimate prize eluded them, the bronze medal provides a well-deserved reward for their efforts throughout the continental soccer tournament.
