The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has confirmed the nomination of Dr. Peter Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State.
Dr. Akpe, who is currently the Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri, hails from Sagbama Local Government Area in Bayelsa West Senatorial District.
His confirmation is seen as restoring political balance in the state amid earlier concerns over zoning.
He was appointed Chief of Staff in March 2024 and previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff from 2020 to 2023 and Acting Chief of Staff between 2023 and February 2024.
He also served as Head of Administration and was a member of the state House of Assembly.
A seasoned public administrator with a PhD in Administration and Planning, Dr. Akpe worked in both Rivers and Bayelsa State civil services for over 20 years before retiring as Assistant Director.
He also served as Head of Administration in the Office of the Deputy Governor between 2006 and 2007, Commissioner with the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Service Commission from 2008 to 2011, and was a two-term member of the Bayelsa Assembly, where he served as Leader of the House from 2011 to 2019.
Beyond public service, he is a fellow of several professional bodies, a 5th Degree Black Belt and Certified Kukiwon Coach in Taekwondo, and currently serves as Pastor-in-Charge of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Bayelsa Province 1.
He is also a part-time lecturer at the Redeemed Christian Bible College, University of Ede, Osun State.
