Türkiye has positioned six fighter jets and air defense systems at the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, TRNC, as the war in Iran entered its 10th day.
The government on Monday said the action was part of the “phased approach” to enhance the security of the TRNC, in light of recent developments in the Middle East.
“Six F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft and air defense systems have been deployed,” the Turkish National Defense Ministry said, adding that additional measures will be taken based on further developments.
On Monday, Iran denied targeting Azerbaijan, Cyprus, or Turkey with drones or missiles. The Foreign Ministry said Tehran’s defense actions should not be “interpreted as hostility toward any of the countries in the region.”
The spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, recalled the armed forces’ general staff had “explicitly and officially announced that such launches were not carried out from inside Iran or by our military forces.”
Last week, NATO air defenses intercepted an Iranian missile that entered Turkish airspace. Greek F-16V fighter jets have been deployed to Paphos Airport in Cyprus after recent Iranian assaults.
The United Kingdom has bolstered its military base in Cyprus after a drone attack, with speculation that it was likely launched by Iran-backed Hezbollah rather than directly from Iran.
On Sunday, Turkish Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said flights to Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria by Turkish Airlines, AJet, Pegasus, and SunExpress have been cancelled until March 13.
Other affected destinations are Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dammam, Doha, Dubai, and Kuwait, Uraloglu informed on X. Pegasus and Turkish Airlines have removed flights to Iran until March 12 and March 20, respectively.
