The presidential candidate of African Action Congress (AAC) and online publisher, Omoyele Sowore, will remain in Kuje prison, Abuja till June 30 when a Federal High Court in Abuja will rule on his motion challenging the revocation of his bail and the arrest warrant issued against him.
The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Sowore for allegedly making false claims against the person of President Bola Tinubu and referring to him as “a criminal” in a post he made on his “X” and Facebook accounts.
The court, on June 22,revoked the bail earlier granted him and issued a bench warrant for his arrest for failing to attend court in violation of an existing order the proceedings in the case shall be on daily basis.
On Wednesday, Justice Mohammed Umar chose June 30 for ruling after listening to lawyers to parties moved the applicationa they filed.
Sowore’s lawyer, Raphael Adakole urged the court to grant his client’s application and reject the counter affidavit filed by the prosecution.
Responding, prosecuting lawyer, Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN) opposed Sowore’s application.
Shortly after the judge announced the adjournment of the case, Adakole requested that should be released to him. He undertook to produce him in court on the next date.
Kehinde objected to Adakole’s request, arguing that such an application could not be made orally.
Adakole, in reaction, said he was only standing in for a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, “of impeccable character whose words should mean something to the court.”
The judge said releaseing Sowore to the lawyer would be preemptive of the ruling scheduled for June 30 on his pending application.
Justice Umar said he was more inclined to leave the matter as adjourned.
