The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has been decorated with the new rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG).
His emergence as a new AIG on Tuesday elicited wild celebrations and jubilation among officers and men of the State Command.
Orutugu was among the senior police officers who sat for the Force promotional examination.
He was shortlisted among those who were successful and promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police.
The immediate past Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, AIG Nnaghe Obono Itam, who handed over to Orutugu as Commissioner of Police, was also decorated.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a statement issued to newsmen on Tuesday that the command was pleased with the good news and the decoration of its Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, as Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG).
Ikenga said, “The Anambra State Police Command is pleased to announce and celebrate the decoration of its substantive Commissioner of Police, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG). Also decorated is the immediate past Commissioner of Police, AIG Nnaghe Obono Itam, psc (+), PhD, who was decorated alongside other senior officers at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, today, 21 July 2026.
“The simultaneous elevation of both the serving and immediate past Commissioners of Police of the Anambra State Command is a remarkable development that reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s recognition of exceptional leadership, professional excellence, dedication to duty and unwavering commitment to public service.
“During their respective tenures in Anambra State, both senior officers demonstrated exemplary leadership and strategic direction in advancing operational policing, strengthening collaboration with stakeholders, improving public confidence and enhancing security across the State.
“Their promotion stands as a fitting recognition of their invaluable contributions to the Force and the nation at large.
“The Anambra State Police Command is immensely proud of this achievement, which not only honours the distinguished officers but also reinforces the Command’s enduring commitment to excellence, professionalism and effective service delivery.”
Ikenga stated that officers and men of the command heartily congratulated both AIGs on the well-deserved elevation. He said the command was confident that their wealth of experience, visionary leadership and commitment to the ideals of the Nigeria Police Force would continue to make a significant impact in their new responsibilities.
“The Anambra State Police Command wishes AIG Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, and AIG Nnaghe Obono Itam, psc (+), PhD, continued success, excellent health and greater accomplishments as they strive to serve the Nigeria Police Force and the nation with honour, integrity and distinction,” he added.
