Before Starrgirl reached streaming platforms, Nigerian singer Ayra Starr had already introduced “Misunderstood” to an audience at Teen Vogue Fest, giving the 2026 album cut an early life onstage.
Ayra Starr writes in the third person, sketching the character of a young woman who has spent much of her life feeling out of place while people around her doubt whether she can succeed independently.
Ayra co-wrote the record with Darius Coleman and Adanna Duru. The songwriting turns isolation into defiance, gradually shifting attention from what others predicted for the character towards the confidence with which she now moves through life.
