First released in February 2023, “Ashawo” is a solo record from Nigerian rapper and songwriter Davolee that later appeared on his 2023 album Na My Shoe I Buckle.
Davolee writes from the perspective of someone focused on making money despite the labels and judgements thrown at him. References to being called an “ashawo” or Yahoo boy feed into a wider statement about hustle, criticism and refusing to give up.
At two minutes and thirty seconds, the track moves quickly and keeps its attention on Davolee’s rap-led performance. The Yoruba and English lines sit naturally together, giving the record the conversational character associated with much of his street-facing songwriting.
The title becomes more interesting within the lyrics themselves. It is less about its literal meaning than the names people attach to someone they do not understand, while Davolee responds by staying concerned with his own progress and survival.
