Revisiting a familiar Nigerian pop composition, “crime” brings singer FOLA into the musical legacy of 2Baba through a new interpretation of his 2006 classic “If Love Is a Crime”, included on the 2026 album 9.
Interest in the remake began earlier in the year when FOLA shared a preview of himself performing the song alongside 2Baba. The original composition explores love through the idea of criminal wrongdoing, questioning whether expressing affection should ever attract punishment.
The recording draws on a recognisable piece of Nigerian popular music, connecting FOLA’s contemporary Afropop background with an earlier generation of influential songwriting. The reference also carries nostalgic significance for listeners familiar with 2Baba’s extensive catalogue.
Beyond its connection to the original, the remake introduces an established composition to younger listeners following FOLA’s recent success. That relationship between different generations gives the release an identity beyond its place on the album.
