US President Donald Trump has announced the appointment of his deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, as the new White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles.
Trump made the announcement on Friday in a post on his Truth Social platform, where he praised Wiles for her service, describing her performance as an “outstanding job”.
He said Wiles would be reassigned to the “Trump Political Operation” following her departure from the influential White House position.
The leadership change comes after Republicans suffered a series of significant setbacks in the 2026 midterm elections, losing control of both chambers of Congress.
Miller, who is widely regarded as the architect of Trump’s hard-line immigration policies, has been one of the president’s closest and most loyal allies.
He previously served as a senior adviser during Trump’s first administration and has continued to play a prominent role in shaping the president’s policy agenda during his second term.
According to Trump, Miller will officially assume his new responsibilities on Monday.
Reacting to the announcement, Wiles described her time working with Trump as “the honor of a lifetime”, expressing continued support for the president and his administration.
“I’m so proud to have been a part of what we’ve accomplished together, from securing our border and cutting taxes to strengthening our economy and putting America First,” she said.
“While my role may be changing, my commitment to the President and the mission never will.”
Wiles, 69, has been regarded as one of the most influential figures in the Trump administration and a close confidante of the US president.
Her departure from the position comes despite Trump’s earlier public assurances that she would remain in the role for an extended period.
Earlier this month, when asked whether Wiles could be replaced soon, Trump dismissed the possibility, insisting there was “zero chance” of such a development.
“Susie is here and she’s gonna be here for a long time,” he said.
Wiles had also recently faced a health challenge after being diagnosed with cancer. However, she announced in September, six months after receiving the diagnosis, that the cancer was in remission.
