Westerhof Reveals What He Would Change If Reappointed As Super Eagles Manager

The Dutchman has expressed his desire to return as Super Eagles manager and has revealed he would make some changes should he be reappointed.

Twenty-six years after leaving his post as Nigeria’s coach, Clemens Westerhof has declared his interest to manager the Super Eagles again.

Gernot Rohr is currently the man in charge, but his current deal runs out in two months. Although he is keen to stay on, it is unknown if he would be willing to accept the conditions laid out by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for a renewal.

With his future uncertain, some names have been touted as potential replacements, and one of them is former Nigeria’s manager, Westerhof.

The Dutchman was in charge of the Super Eagles from 1989-1994, creating arguably the greatest Nigerian side of all time.

Till today, Westerhof is still considered as the best foreign manager Nigeria ever had. The 79-year-old lead Nigeria to her first World Cup at USA 94.

The Super Eagles impressed on their first appearance on the biggest stage, reaching the second round where they suffered an agonising extra-time loss to Italy.  Nigeria also won her second nations cup title under Westerhof, beating Zambia in the final at Tunisia 94.

While 1994 was an excellent year for Nigeria, Westerhof left the shores of Nigeria following the second-round exit at the World Cup.

Although he has revealed the reason for his departure, the Dutchman has revealed he is interested in the job again should the NFF part ways with Rohr.

In an interview with Vanguard, Westerhof insists he’s ready to return, and he would make some major changes if given a chance.

“Yeah. I will bring a young Dutch coach, I will do it together with him and Nigerian assistants, with Alloy Agu as goalkeepers trainer,” he said. Together we will do it, and I want to win the World Cup.

“We will train, and I will tell them what my plans are; how I want to do it.”

We will train three times a day. Six in the morning fitness, seven in the morning breakfast, ten in the morning first training and four in the evening second training.

“Every day and at the end of 14 days, nobody can beat us,” Westerhof added.
