A tragic incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Unizik), Awka, has sparked outrage among students after a law student reportedly died due to being denied timely access to her diabetes medication.
The deceased, Ajana Isabella, was a resident of Elmada Hostel near the university campus.
According to eyewitness accounts from fellow students, Ajana and her roommates lost their room key and urgently needed a spare key to retrieve her insulin medication.
When they approached the hostel mistress, identified as Madam Bright, for assistance, she allegedly demanded N120,000 for a spare key, in line with what she said was the hostel’s policy. Each of the three roommates was asked to contribute N40,000.
The students reportedly pleaded with Madam Bright, explaining their financial constraint and the urgency of Ajana’s health condition. Despite their pleas, they claim no immediate help was offered.
“Ajana needed her insulin. We told Madam Bright we couldn’t afford that money immediately and begged her to help us with the key,” one student said. “But she said rules were rules.”
As Ajana’s health worsened, she eventually collapsed and was rushed to the hospital on Sunday, July 6. Sadly, she died three days later on Wednesday, July 9.
The incident has triggered widespread anger among Unizik students, who have taken to social media with the hashtag #Justice4Ajana, demanding a thorough investigation and accountability.
University authorities have yet to issue an official statement at the time of this report, but students are calling for urgent reforms in hostel management policies to prevent a recurrence of such a devastating loss.
