The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested an Abuja resident, over the death of a three-year-old boy who fell into an uncovered septic tank.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday in a residential compound where the child was reportedly playing before slipping into the open soakaway.

Police said the tank, which was allegedly left uncovered by the suspect despite repeated warnings from neighbours, had been a known safety concern in the area.

In a statement issued on Friday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the uncovered soak away had long posed a danger to residents in the area, and several warnings and pleas were reportedly made by concerned neighbours to the suspect, who failed to take necessary action.”

The child was pulled out of the tank and taken to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

Jallo is currently in custody as police continue investigations into the matter.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, according to the statement, commiserated with the family and advised residents to prioritise environmental safety.

“He also urges residents to take environmental safety seriously, while parents and guardians must also be vigilant and ensure their wards are properly monitored at all times to prevent such needless loss of life,” Adeh added.

The police said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
