The Rivers State Government has announced that it will soon conclude arrangements to enroll its workforce in the Employees’ Compensation Scheme of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF.
The Secretary to the State Government, Benibo Anabraba, disclosed this on Thursday while receiving a delegation of Executive Members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Rivers State Council, during a courtesy visit to his office.
Anabraba noted that the state government is thoroughly reviewing the policies governing the scheme, which, upon final approval by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, will guarantee medical care and rehabilitation for employees who become ill or sustain injuries in the course of their duties and, in cases of fatal accidents, provide compensation to their dependants.
In a statement by the Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Juliana Masi, the SSG emphasized Governor Fubara’s commitment to ensuring that Rivers State adopts the scheme.
The statement read: “We have met with the management of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, and are intentional about the commencement of the scheme in Rivers State.
“The welfare of workers remains a top priority of this administration, and we will undertake this scheme to ensure that workers who get injured or are involved in accidents in the line of duty receive care and support, including instilling a sense of security in service.”
He added that the state will also collaborate with the private sector, particularly those in the construction industry, requiring NSITF certification as part of their operational criteria to safeguard workers and promote their well-being on the job.
Anabraba further expressed concern over the indiscriminate parking of trucks along major roads in the state, describing it as a threat to public safety and a source of environmental hazards.
He urged the TUC to engage and sensitize its affiliates, including the Association of Shipping, Clearing and Forwarding Agencies, the Union of Tipper and Quarry Employers, and the Road Transport Employers Association, on the dangers of such practices.
He stressed the need for compliance with state traffic laws, warning that the government may be compelled to take decisive action if these violations persist.
