American B-2 Spirit stealth bombers are expected to arrive at United Kingdom military bases within days as part of escalating US operations targeting Iran, according to Western officials cited in media reports.
The aircrafts are reportedly set to deploy to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
The Diego Garcia base has long served as a strategic hub for US military operations, while RAF Fairford is the Royal Air Force’s forward operating location for American heavy bombers.
The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit, regarded as one of the world’s most advanced and expensive military aircraft, is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons and penetrating heavily defended airspace.
The reported deployment follows recent US strikes on Iranian military infrastructure.
On February 28, the US military used B-2 bombers in an operation targeting Iranian ballistic missile facilities.
United States Central Command confirmed that the aircraft dropped 2,000-pound bombs on what it described as “hardened” missile sites.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is said to have approved limited US use of UK bases for strikes on Iran’s missile capabilities, citing the need to protect British and American allies as tensions intensified.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated that Britain had “stepped up alongside the Americans.”
Security concerns have also risen in Cyprus. RAF Akrotiri, a key British air base on the island, was struck by a suspected drone on March 2, causing minor damage.
The unmanned aircraft was reported to resemble an Iranian-made Shahed drone, similar to those used in other regional conflicts.
The UK Ministry of Defence said force-protection measures at the base have been raised to the highest level, noting that approximately 4,000 service members and their families are stationed there.
