The US Senate on Wednesday rejected a Democratic-led war powers resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s authority to continue military operations in Iran, handing a major political victory to the administration as Operation Epic Fury enters its fifth day.
Senators voted 53-47 to defeat the measure sponsored by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., which would have required congressional approval before Trump could sustain or expand U.S. military actions against Iran.
The outcome largely followed party lines. Republican lawmakers united behind the president’s decisions, while most Democrats opposed continued strikes without explicit authorization from Congress.
Only one Republican, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, supported the resolution, and Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., was the lone Democrat to vote against it.
Democrats argued that Trump’s military campaign lacks a clear strategy and that Congress, not the White House, has the constitutional authority to authorize extended uses of force. They criticized the administration for failing to outline plans for withdrawal or post-conflict goals.
Kaine said the vote would put senators “on record” about their stance on war powers, saying that lawmakers should not “give the president an easy pass.”
Republicans countered that Trump acted within his constitutional authority as commander in chief and defended the strikes as necessary to confront threats from the Iranian regime. Several GOP senators said Congress could use its power of the purse if it disagrees with the military campaign.
The resolution’s defeat means the administration can continue Operation Epic Fury, a joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iranian targets, without new congressional restrictions for now.
