Ghanaian-American singer Ama Serwah Genfi, popularly known as Amaarae, has weighed in on the long-running debate about pop music royalty, stating that Janet Jackson is more deserving of the title “King of Pop” than her late brother, Michael Jackson.
The singer made the remarks during an interview with Pitchfork while discussing the influence of Janet Jackson’s 1997 album, ‘The Velvet Rope’.
Amaarae, known for her hit song ‘Sad Girls Love Money’, shared her admiration for the album, explaining why she believes Janet Jackson’s impact on pop music deserves greater recognition.
Speaking on the project, she said, “Every Janet Jackson’s album is fantastic, but ‘The Velvet Rope’ is the best. If I was conscious in 1997 when the album dropped, I would have played it nonstop. It’s so vulnerable, sexy, aggressive and experimental.
“Janet, to me, is the real king of pop. No shade to Michael Jackson.”
The comment has drawn attention because Michael Jackson has long been widely known as the “King of Pop,” a title associated with his influence on music, performance, and popular culture.
Amaarae’s remarks came as she reflected on the legacy of ‘The Velvet Rope’, an album that continues to be celebrated for its themes and musical direction nearly three decades after its release.
